Less & More #5: Less Routine & More Adventure
TL;DR
The more comfortable you are with your routine, the easier it is to remain flexible and adaptable to whatever life might throw your way — including adventures of all sizes.
Week five of our Less & More Challenge is challenging us to put down routines and embrace adventure.
Truth be told — this was a tough one for me to sit with at first.
Less ROUTINE, really?
If you know me, you know how much I love a solid, dependable routine. I even wrote a blog about my Love Affair with Rituals.
And I’ve especially found ritual and routine to be a lifesaver during challenging times (like a global pandemic or two industry-wide strikes!). I can’t explain how strangely comforted I am by my kids' after school activity routines, or knowing I’m going to yoga or will play pickleball every week (yes, I fiiiiiiiinally learned the game and I’m all in!).
While the outside world feels at times unbearably chaotic and unstable, at least I know where I need to be at certain times.
It may sound counterintuitive, but I believe that the more consistent you are with your routine, the easier it is to remain flexible with whatever life throws your way.
Including adventures of all sizes.
ACTION OF THE WEEK: Say YES to adventure.
We’re calling upon Shonda Rhimes and her Year of Yes for this week’s action.
Shonda reminds us that saying YES to play (or adventure) — even if it makes us late to work — is ALWAYS worth it.
As most of us are deep into fall school/work mode right now, I’m finding it essential to create some type of routine within our day, but leave room for saying YES to embracing the adventure.
The assignments will get done.
The lunches will get made.
The books will be read.
But also...something unexpectedly fun or interesting or heartwarming will arise outside of those routines. I love that!
And just as important, the connections we create through adventure — in whatever form it takes — will carry us through the more hectic times coming up (election + holidays, anyone?)
Routine in moderation — that's my own personal adventure! What's yours?
